Our Story
The 1964 Rugby Foundation was founded in 2004 as a 501(c)(3) charitable sports organization charged with the responsibility of growing and supporting the sport of rugby football in northeast Ohio. Named for the year when rugby was founded in Cleveland by Dr. John Bergfeld, the renowned Cleveland Clinic orthopedic surgeon and former team physician for the Cleveland Browns, The 1964 Rugby Foundation has donated over $10,000 to local clubs for the purpose of promoting the sport. Recently, The Foundation has increased it’s focus on creating community awareness of our mission, vision and goals, and is emphasizing a grass-roots approach to broaden the base of players, fans and supporters. This year, in 2014, we will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the founding of rugby in Cleveland. Now is the time to join us and become involved in shaping the tradition of the next 50 years of rugby in Cleveland, Ohio. Thank you for your support!
